Letter to my children: What does learning look like?

There was a little turtle.

He lived in a box.

He swam in a puddle.

He climbed on the rocks.

I was reading The Little Turtle again and again to you, Bean, as you did your cursive practice. We were in the playroom/schoolroom while Dragon, you were finishing up your breakfast in the kitchen. (fewer distractions)

I leaned in to watch the progression from “o” to “v” (a tricky one in cursive) when suddenly you and I heard the Dragon’s voice from the other room.

He snapped at a mosquito.

He snapped at a flea.

He snapped at a minnow.

And he snapped at me.

He caught the mosquito.

He caught the flea.

He caught the minnow.

But he didn't catch me.

The Bean and I looked at each other, amazed.

Bean, you whispered over to me as we heard your brother launch forth again, “Momma, we just read it through once and Dragon already remembers it!?”

“Bean, it is amazing amazing!”

We all joined in for the last line of the poem. “BUT he didn’t catch ME!”

Homeschooling is not easy but these moments are the glue and the sparkle that drive along the party. Thank you both for making this party happen for all of us. It is truly my pleasure and honor to be your Momma. I love you both. Can’t wait to figure out which poem to memorize next!
